Professional Farrier Experience

Nate began shoeing horses in 2006 and formally apprenticed in 2007. Through years of dedication to the craft, he continued his education by attending advanced farrier clinics taught by some of the most respected farriers in the industry including Jeff Engler, Dave Wright CJF, Shane Carter CJF, Dennis Manning CJF, Chris Gregory CJF FWCF, Mitch Taylor CJF, and Jim Quick.

In 2013 Nate successfully passed the American Farriers Association Certified Farrier (CF) examination, and in the spring of 2017 he completed the Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF) exam — the highest level of certification offered through the American Farriers Association.

That same summer Nate competed in the Colorado Classic Farrier Competition, winning 1st place in the First Division, demonstrating both technical skill and craftsmanship in forging and shoeing.

Throughout his career Nate has continued refining his skills alongside some of the industry’s top competitors and world champions including Josh Stanley CJF AWCF, Tom Paterson CJF, Brian Buckner CJF, Brad Grozbrech CJF, Jacob Manning CJF, and Kelly Gregory CF.

Nate works year-round throughout Star Valley and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, serving a wide range of equine disciplines including ranch horses, reiners, jumpers, cutters, rope horses, barrel horses, trail horses, outfitters, mounted patrol horses, dressage horses, race horses, and breeding stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do horses always need shoes?

Not all horses require shoes. Many horses can remain barefoot depending on their workload, terrain, and hoof condition. Nate evaluates each horse individually to determine whether trimming or shoeing is the best option.

Are you available year-round?

Yes. Nate lives and works year-round in Star Valley and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

When should I call a veterinarian?

If a horse is significantly lame, injured, or showing signs of infection, a veterinarian should be consulted first. Nate frequently works alongside veterinarians when therapeutic shoeing is required.

What is a Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF)?

The Certified Journeyman Farrier certification through the American Farriers Association is the highest level of certification offered by the organization. It requires extensive testing in trimming, shoeing, forging, and hoof anatomy.

Off-Season Blacksmithing

During the winter months Nate also does ornamental blacksmithing, creating hand-forged pieces and occasionally teaching beginner blacksmithing classes for adults, father-son groups, and children interested in learning the craft.
